I nomi Bovadium e Cowley sono latinizzazioni di due toponimi inglesi. Bovadium \u00e8 un calco latino di Oxford (dall\u2019anglosassone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oxa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cbue\u201d e <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ford<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cguado\u201d, cio\u00e8 \u201cguado dei buoi\u201d), mentre Cowley deriva dall\u2019anglosassone <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">c\u00fa<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cvacca\u201d e <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">l\u0113ah<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cprato, campo\u201d; perci\u00f2 latinizzato diventa Vaccipratum. Per il tema, questa storia inedita pu\u00f2 essere accostata a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mr. Bliss<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, mentre l\u2019uso del latino per fini satirici si ritrova ne <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il cacciatore di draghi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Farmer Giles of Ham<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; scritto nel 1937, pubblicato nel 1949): basti pensare alla spada Caudimordax (Mordicoda) o a toponimi come Aula Draconaria (latinizzazione di Worminghall, Buckinghamshire) e Quercetum (latinizzazione di Oakley, Buckinghamshire)<a href=\"#nota2\">[2]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Il 25 ottobre 1960 la segretaria di Tolkien chiese per conto del Professore il nome del direttore di <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time and Tide<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Rayner Unwin. Tolkien voleva inviare alla rivista britannica (che aveva gi\u00e0 pubblicato la sua poesia <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imram<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nel 1955) un breve pezzo che aveva scritto, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cuna specie di fantasy satirico\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, come lui stesso lo defin\u00ec, riferendosi con ogni probabilit\u00e0 all\u2019inedito <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bovadium Fragments<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Il 24 agosto 1966 Tolkien prest\u00f2 a Rayner Unwin <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bovadium Fragments<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Il giorno dopo Rayner Unwin scrisse a Tolkien di averlo letto con piacere, suggerendogli di pubblicarlo sull\u2019<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxford Magazine<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
