Si narra che Thor port\u00f2 via Aurvandill dalla terra dei giganti in un cesto; il dito del piede di Aurvandill, che sporgeva dal cesto, si congel\u00f2. Thor lo stacc\u00f2 e lo lanci\u00f2 verso il cielo, facendone una stella<a href=\"#nota1\">[1]<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Che la storia di Aurvandill sia stata cristianizzata in epoca medievale \u00e8 attestato dal poema epico tedesco su Orendel, contenuto negli <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heldenb\u00fccher<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, i <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libri degli eroi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> risalenti al XIV secolo, in cui l\u2019eroe ottiene <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">il mantello senza cuciture<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> del suo padrone, con riferimento alla Sacra Tunica. \u201c\u00c9arendel\u201d viene riportata nel glossario di \u00c9pinal con il termine latino <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">j\u016dbar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lo splendore dei corpi celesti<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<a href=\"#nota2\">[2]<\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Anche lo spelling \u201cOerendil\u201d nel glossario di Erfurt \u00e8 interessante. Sembrerebbe probabile che \u201c\u00c9arendel\u201d stia per Orione, la costellazione pi\u00f9 luminosa in inverno, e \u00d6rvandels-t\u00e1 possa corrispondere a Rigel, stella principale della costellazione<a href=\"#nota3\">[3]<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Si ricordano, inoltre, le seguenti forme: antico alto-tedesco \u201cOrentil\u201d, medio alto-tedesco \u201cOrendel\u201d, e longobardo \u201cAuriwandalo\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrive Tolkien nella Lettera 297: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Il prestito, quando capita (non spesso) riguarda semplicemente i suoni che vengono poi integrati in una nuova costruzione; e solo nel caso di E\u00e4rendil il riferimento alla fonte pu\u00f2 gettare una luce sulle leggende o sul loro \u2018significato\u2019, e anche in questo caso la luce non \u00e8 molta. L\u2019uso di <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00e9arendel<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> nel simbolismo cristiano anglo-sassone come araldo del sorgere del vero Sole in Cristo \u00e8 completamente alieno al mio modo di pensare<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sono i celebri versi del <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christ I<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, o <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019Avvento<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, poema anglosassone attribuito a Cynewulf, che si firma in caratteri runici verso la fine del <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christ II<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Infatti, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[n]el giugno del 1914, alla fine del terzo anno, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[Tolkien]<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prese in prestito dalla biblioteca dell\u2019Exeter un\u2019antologia in tre volumi di poesia anglosassone da leggere durante le vacanze estive. Fu una citazione nel glossario a colpirlo, una frase del poema inglese antico noto come <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christ I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<a href=\"#nota4\">[4]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Quello fu per lui un punto di svolta, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">il momento fondamentale nello sviluppo della sua mitologia<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<a href=\"#nota5\">[5]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, come lo ha definito Carl Phelpstead. <\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pi\u00f9 tardi Tolkien scriver\u00e0 di quella vera e propria folgorazione, la scintilla da cui ebbe inizio l\u2019epopea letteraria del legendarium: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avvertii un brivido singolare, come se qualche cosa si fosse mosso dentro di me e mi fossi a met\u00e0 risvegliato dal sonno. Qualcosa di molto lontano, di estraneo e di molto bello si nascondeva dietro quelle parole, se io solo lo avessi potuto afferrare, nella lontananza, dietro l\u2019inglese antico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<a href=\"#nota6\">[6]<\/a><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Secondo John Garth<a href=\"#nota7\">[7]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, il libro da cui Tolkien lesse quei fatidici versi era la <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bibliothek der angels\u00e4chsichen Poesie<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> di Grein-W\u00fclker (G.H. Wigand, Kassel 1883-98). I versi in questione sono i vv. 104-5 del <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christ I<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00c9ala \u00c9arendel,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engla beorhtast,\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ofer middangeard<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monnum sended<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Una traduzione letterale suonerebbe cos\u00ec: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O \u00c9arendel, il pi\u00f9 splendente degli angeli, \/ sulla Terra di Mezzo inviato tra gli uomini<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In una nota alla Lettera 297, Tolkien spiega: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spesso si \u00e8 pensato che <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[\u00c9arendel]<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> si riferisse a Cristo (o a Maria), ma il confronto con Bl[ickling] Hom[ilies] suggerisce che il riferimento sia al Battista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Tolkien conclude quindi che i <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">versi si riferiscono a un araldo, e messaggero divino<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> e non a Cristo o a Maria. \u00c9arendel si riferisce, infatti, alla stella che precede l\u2019alba (un messaggero, come l\u2019alba che precede la venuta di Cristo, inteso come vero sole); perci\u00f2, secondo Tolkien, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">la parola indica Venere, la Stella del Mattino, e si riferisce metaforicamente a Giovanni il Battista<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<a href=\"#nota8\">[8]<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Gli antichi, infatti, consideravano Venere una stella per via della sua luminosit\u00e0 prima dell\u2019alba, e per questo la chiamavano \u201cStella del Mattino\u201d.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per approfondire si veda anche:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C.F.
